ballot initiatives are THE WORST. glad you’re having fun!

Yeah I couldn’t help but roll my eyes a little about how every single one had money earmarked for kindergarten education and adorable puppies and so on. Even the ones that sounded eminently sensible (e.g. creating a new higher tax bracket) had so much other stuff thrown in so that the largest possible proportion of the population would find something to love.

But I guess I just think it’s cool that people are so engaged and willing to have some direct input in the democratic process? I dunno. That’s probably way too cheery a view of the whole concept.

  1. cakesandcourage said: Yeah, way too cheery. I tend to think they’re nothing but a recipe for mayhem all around. But then they’re 98.7% so crass and idiotic that it may color my perception of them. Put it this way: you rarely hear of a sensible ballot measure.
  2. gloriouss said: I dont mind ballot initiatives (democracy yeah!) but people are so misinformed about them most of the time :( hence all the fun spending.
  3. abbyjean said: yeah except the ones that are about oppressing identifiable minorities (gays, racial minorities, immigrants) - there’s a lot of those. i don’t think it indicates engagement, just easier $$ manipulation of the process.
